Kilternan Parish
Vol.10 No.3 April 2004

Parish Fete, Saturday 8th May.

Love them or loathe them the Parish and School Family Fun Day and Fair (The Fete), on Saturday 8th May, was a tremendous success - beautiful weather; firm ground for car parking and pony rides: ample produce on all stalls and, most importantly, good natured sharing of the work on the day. Those few words should not belie the effort of many people in organising and preparing for the day, and the many, many people rostered in for all sorts of tasks. It seemed that all present, whether from parish, school or simply visiting, enjoyed the day - especially the children!

In addition to generosity of spirit, there was also material generosity as people supported the parish and school. To each and every one we say, "thank you"

Parishes Together Celebrate

On Sunday afternoon the 27th June a Garden Party will be held, by kind invitation of the Johnson family, in the grounds of Newgrange, Barnaslighan Lane, Kilternan. The parishes of Kilternan, Rathmichael, Tullow and Sandyford will join together, as God's people in this area, that we might meet and raise funds for two worthy charitable causes:
- the local branch of St. Vincent de Paul;
- the Coronary Care Unit of St. Colmcille's Hospital, Loughlinstown, to provide specific equipment which will make more effective the diagnosis and treatment of patients' coronary needs. It is hoped to raise substantial financial support for both these causes by:

(a) a monster raffle with super prizes - a helicopter ride over Dublin City, holiday accommodation in South Africa or Portugal!!!

(b) admission fee (by ticket only) Adults €25, Children €3, to include barbecue and fun and games for all the family.

In this, the 175th Anniversary Year of St. Mary's Church, Sandyford, we hope parishioners and friends will support this "Parishes Together Day" by buying / selling the raffle tickets (which accompanied this issue of Klips),and by purchasing tickets to come along on the day. Admission tickets are available through the School and from the Rector, however, a number of parishioners will also have tickets for sale.

As we come to the summer months we wish everyone happy and safe holidaying, and ask you to bring the good wishes of Kilternan Parish to the churches you visit during the summer.

God bless and keep you all.

David.

Easter Vestry Meeting

The Annual Easter Vestry Meeting was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday 20th April 2004. Some forty eight people attended. This year no elections were needed as nominations for People's Church Warden and People's Glebe Warden were unopposed, and only eleven nominations were received for membership of the Select Vestry. The only problem this caused was where to slot in a cup of tea, especially we wanted to mark the occasion of Mrs Doreen RichardsonÕs 90th birthday!

The following members of Select Vestry have been nominated`,elected at the Easter Vestry and were commissioned during morning worship on Sunday 25th April. As members of Select Vestry these people have responsibility for the management/oversight of parish affairs for the coming year.

Church Wardens: Mrs Carol Tweed, Dr Derek Carroll.

Glebe Wardens Mr. David Shirley, Mr Karl Reid.

Select Vestry: Dr Ian Elliott, Mrs Ruth Elmes, Mr Geoffrey Willis, Nick Maxwell, Mr Peter Knaggs, Mrs Jennifer Lynam, Mrs Jean van der Lee, Mr Gary Nolan, Mr Adrian Clements, Mr David Copeland, Mr Terry Lilburn.

In adopting the parochial accounts as presented, one comment worthy of note was made in respect of a shortfall in regular income over the past two years. The Parish should endeavour to increase the income from envelopes, annual subscriptions and standing orders such that we meet our regular annual outgoings. The proceeds of special events can then more correctly be used either for specific ministry expenses or to buildup a small reserve.

Parish Profiles

As has become a tradition in the Kilternan Parish Klips in recent years, we would like to tell parishioners a little bit about each other, with a view to helping people get to know one another and thus enhancing our sense of community and friendship. As this is the first issue of the Klips since the Easter Vestry Meeting, we are this month profiling our new Church Wardens for 2004 2005.

People's Church Warden - Dr Derek Carroll

Our new People's Church Warden is Dr. Derek Carroll. Derek was born in Rathgar and grew up in Foxrock. He attended Belvedere College, then studied mechanical and electrical engineering at U.C.D., taking his Ph.D. in electrical engineering. He had a successful career as a department head in the ESB, and retired some years ago to enjoy family life with his wife Adrienne. His main leisure interests are music and golf.

Derek and Adrienne met when they were both singers in the Dublin Grand Opera Society, and we are fortunate in having Adrienne in our church choir. The couple now live in Cabinteely with their two children, Julian and Saskia. Julian, an engineering graduate, is temporarily working in New Zealand while Saskia is studying occupational therapy at Trinity.

Derek has been involved with Kilternan Parish for nearly twenty years and we wish him well with this, his second term as church warden.

Rector's Church Warden - Carol Tweed

The new Rector's Church Warden is Carol Tweed. Carol came to Kilternan Parish five years ago from Dundrum, and has served on the Select Vestry here for the past four years.

Carol went to Alexandra College, Trinity and the University of Ulster, and has had a varied career in chartered accountancy, social work and now as a self-employed careers consultant and writer. She has two children, Jennifer (17) and Conor (15), at Alexandra and Sandford Park schools respectively. Jenni has just started learning to drive and Conor is about to take his Junior Certificate exams.

Carol enjoys reading and learning, particularly in the areas of psychology, social science, politics and economics. She is currently taking c postgraduate history degree with the Open University and is planning to start a business and finance course in Dublin shortly.

Carol was previously an active member in St. WarberghÕs and Taney parishes and now, like Derek, she is looking forward to her second term as church warden in Kilternan.

Confirmation

Congratulations to Amy Brennan, Alice Horan, Rebecca Humphreys and Elliott and Josh Madden who were confirmed in St. Mary's Church, Sandyford, on Wednesday, 31 March 2004. Bishop Martin Drennan presided, with the local priests assisting, but this wonderful service was much more down to the young candidates from the schools at St. Mary's, Sandyford; St. Patrick's, Glencullen; Our Lady of the Wayside, Kilternan; and Kilternan Church of Ireland National School and to their teachers who prepared the candidates and ordered the service so beautifully.

The Church was packed with parents, sponsors and friends: children led music and singing, took part in dance, reading and prayers. As the candidates were confirmed in the spirit, so the Church seemed spirit-filled! Congratulations also to Carol Dalton who was confirmed with her classmates in St. Peter's, Little Bray, on Thursday, 14th May 2004.

Lord may your fatherly hand ever ever be over these young people. Let your holy spirit ever be with them. Lead them to know and obey your word, and keep them in eternal light; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
