The Rector's Newsletter
Easter:
It was a great Easter, in some ways special as God intended it,
for at Easter we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from
the dead and the "mystery" of the Christian faith - Christ has
died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again!
Mystery though it may be, and somewhat irrelevant and detached
from the lives of many, yet there is truth, comfort and hope
eternal in the promise God offers us in the cross and resurrection.
Perhaps what is needed for some is that step in faith. Archbishop
Eames tells of a family giving a dinner party. Just as the guests
were about to begin the meal a loud thud was heard upstairs. Mum
and Dad leaped from the table and rushed upstairs to find their
youngest had fallen out of bed. The little lad was comforted and
returned to his bed. For a little while Dad sat with the boy. No,
he didn't know why he had fallen out of bed. Eventually Dad began
to leave, and as he switched out the light his son's little voice
said "Dad, I think I know why I fell out of bed". "Why was that,
son?". "I wasn't in far enough". To be in bed far enough, to be in
water deep enough, to be able to take one's feet from the bottom
and swim, to take that leap in faith - and all the while to know
that Jesus Christ, God's only son, has died for us and has been
raised to life eternal. And, not just for us, but for all people.
"Christ the first fruits, then all who believe in Him"
Parish Website
Congratulations, the parish website has won the 2003 General Synod
Award for the best website design. Four or five years ago the
possibility of "having" a parish website was raised with not a
little expectation that the Rector would "provide" same. Now, apart
from having no expertise in IT, even less time and the sure and
certain knowledge that "having and providing" a website is the easy
bit, the Rector left it in abeyance. A few tentative enquiries were
made but to no avail, until lo and behold, a small group, Nick
Maxwell, Carol Tweed and Peter Knaggs began to run with the idea
and Pat Naismith kindly offered to design the site. Now, though in
its infancy and teething accordingly, http://www.kilternan.dublin.anglican.org/
has won an award. Well done to all concerned, Pat, Nick, Carol and
Peter and to those who helped with contributions, Ian Elliott and
Mary White.
Féte
Well done to the parish and school for the successful manner in
which the féte was run - the lovely social occasion and the
welcome financial result. Each time one wonders if such events are
no longer viable in areas such as ours. Despite the demands on time
and energy it seems very worthwhile. Maybe we do need to tweak some
of the "attractions", and maybe we do need more directly to involve
every parishioner and parent!
School
Very little stays the same. At the end of this school year we will
say "goodbye and thank you" to Mr Malcolm Stuart who has been
principal for the past 15 years. Malcolm, who this year returned
from a 5 year career break, leaves to spend more time with his
family. Ms Judith Hanbridge will also leave to take up a teaching
post in Oman. We wish Malcolm and Judith every good wish for the
future. We also ask your prayers as the selection board now seeks
to appoint a new principal and a fourth assistant teacher.
A committed group of parents are
beginning a fundraising programme in respect of a fifth
classroom. In the light of financial constraints affecting the
Department of Education & Science, parents at a meeting on
8th April, 2003, unanimously agreed to begin raising funds to
build a permanent fifth classroom through standing orders,
fundraising events and other activities. The parents hope to
involve every family in the school and will look also to the
parish and wider community for their support. Already of our
target figure of € 130,000 we have
€ 35,000 in hand and € 5,000 has been
promised by the Diocesan Board of Education.

Parish Gift Day
The refurbishment of the church cottage, which is now let, was
an expensive project which has left the parish with a financial
deficit, currently € 18,000. Anxious to rectify this
the Select Vestry has asked that we hold a gift day on Sunday,
8th June, Pentecost. As we realise God's gift of his Spirit to
us and his Church, may we respond by giving God his worth at
this time by supporting as generously as we can this gift
day.
Donations may be sent to the
Rector or put on the plate in church on Sunday, 8th June.
Conscious of the value of income tax rebates any gift should be
clearly marked and named.

Arrivals at the Rectory
Our Anglo-Nubian nanny, "Drumbawn Lilly", commonly known as
"Polly" gave birth to two little nanny kids on Maundy Thursday.
Mother and kids are doing well and they have been appropriately
named "Maundy" and "Thursdy". Having lost "Drumbawn Rita" last
October perhaps it is best to keep these two kids for future
breeding as there are so few of the breed in the country and in
the long term it will benefit Béthar and people in
developing countries.
As we come to the summer months please remember that you are
part of God's family wherever you travel, and that you will be
welcome in local churches and they will value your visit - as
will God. Enjoy the "Summer"!
Yours in Christ
David
